Why Your Business Isn't Ranking on Google (And How to Fix It)

"Why isn't your business ranking on Google?" — local SEO for South Wales

"Why is my business not ranking on Google?" It's one of the most common questions I hear from local businesses in Cardiff and across South Wales - and the frustrating part is that the answer is rarely "your website is bad." If your business isn't ranking on Google, it's usually down to one of a handful of specific, fixable problems. Here are the ones that catch nearly everyone out.

You don't have a Google Business Profile (or it's half-finished)

For a local business, this is the single biggest reason you're not ranking on Google. Your Google Business Profile is what puts you in the "map pack" - the little map with three listings that sits at the top of local search results. No profile, no map pack, and you've lost the most valuable real estate on the page before the race even starts.

If you already have one, the question is whether it's actually finished. A verified profile with the right primary category, your full services, opening hours, and real photos will out-perform a bare listing every time. This is almost always the fastest win available.

Your website doesn't send clear local signals

Google can only rank you for a place if it's confident where you operate and who you serve. Many sites never say it plainly. Your town and region should appear naturally in your page titles, your headings, and your body copy - not stuffed in, but present. Your address and phone number should be consistent everywhere they appear online. If Google isn't sure you're a Cardiff business, it won't rank you for people searching in Cardiff.

Your page titles and descriptions don't match what people search

Your title tag and meta description are the first thing Google reads and the first thing a searcher sees. If your homepage title is just your business name, you're leaving the match to chance - and quietly capping your ranking on Google before you start. Titles that include what you do and where you do it - "Logo Designer in Cardiff", not "Home" - tell Google and the searcher, in one line, that you're the right result.

You're expecting results faster than SEO delivers

This one isn't a fault, it's a mismatch of expectations. Local SEO, done right, tends to move faster than broad national SEO - fixing your Google Business Profile and your local signals can shift your ranking in weeks, not months. But it's not instant. If you made changes last week and haven't moved yet, that's usually normal, not failure.

How to find out why your business isn't ranking on Google

The reason these problems are so common is that they're invisible from the outside - your site looks fine to you, so nothing flags them. That's exactly what a local SEO audit is for: checking your Google Business Profile, your local signals, and your on-page basics against what's actually ranking, and handing you a prioritised list of the few things that will move the needle first.

I recently took a Wrexham dental lab from effectively invisible to ranking locally in six weeks, mostly by fixing these fundamentals in the right order. Nothing exotic - just the boring things, done properly.
