What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation. Where traditional SEO aims to rank your page in a list of search results, GEO aims to get your content cited, quoted or drawn upon by generative AI systems when they answer a relevant question. It's sometimes also called AEO - Answer Engine Optimisation. Same core idea: optimising to be the answer, not just a link near it.

How is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap more than they differ - good SEO fundamentals still matter - but the emphasis shifts. SEO optimises for ranking; GEO optimises for retrieval, because an AI model pulls in chunks of content to build its answer and your job is to make yours easy to pull out and use. Self-contained beats clever: AI systems lift passages out of context, so a paragraph that stands on its own gets used while one that only makes sense after three others does not. And structure does heavy lifting - clear question-style headings, direct answers, and schema all help a machine understand what your page says.

Why does GEO matter now?

The behaviour has already changed. When someone asks an AI who the best local SEO consultant in South Wales is, or how to get their business on Google Maps, the answer is assembled from sources the model trusts. If your content is structured to be understood and cited, you can be one of those sources. If it isn't, you're invisible in a channel that's only growing - the same way businesses were once invisible in Google itself.

How do I start optimising for GEO?

You don't need to throw out your SEO for GEO; you build on it. Five things to start with:

What's the honest caveat about GEO?

GEO is a fast-moving field, and anyone claiming certainty about exactly how each AI system ranks sources is guessing. What's not speculative is the direction of travel: more discovery is happening inside AI answers, and the businesses structuring their content for it now will have a head start. GEO is the area I - James Huntington, an SEO and digital content specialist working through Signature Graphic Design in South Wales - have been building on most over the past year, including my own AI-tools review site, WhatAITools.co.uk, built from scratch and ranking on page one within weeks. If you want your site working for AI search as well as traditional search, a Local SEO Audit now covers both.
