If I could only fix one thing on a local business's online presence, it would be this - every time. Your Google Business Profile is the most direct route into local search, and it's the one most businesses either don't have or haven't finished. Here's why it matters and how to get it right.

What is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that puts your business on Google Maps and in the "map pack" - the boxed set of three local results with a map that sits above the normal blue links. For anyone searching "near me" or with a place name, the map pack is the first thing they see and the first thing they tap. If you're not in it, you're invisible where it matters most.

Why is a Google Business Profile the fastest local SEO win?

On-page SEO and content take time to build authority. A Business Profile is different: claim it, verify it, fill it out properly, and you can go from nowhere to appearing in local results in a matter of days. It's rare in SEO to find something this high-impact that acts this quickly - which is exactly why it's the first thing I check in any local audit.

How to set up your Google Business Profile properly

Having a profile isn't the same as having a good one. A bare listing gets buried under competitors who've done the work. To give yours the best chance, focus on these:

  • Choose the right primary category - this is the biggest single ranking factor within your profile. Be specific: "Graphic Designer", not just "Marketing Agency".

  • Complete every field - services, service areas, opening hours, a proper description and attributes. Google rewards completeness.

  • Add real photos of your work, premises and team. Profiles with genuine photos get more clicks and calls.

  • Keep your name, address and phone number identical to how they appear on your website and other listings. Inconsistency confuses Google and dilutes your local signals.

  • Collect reviews, and reply to them. Steady, recent reviews with responses are a strong trust signal to both Google and the customer reading them.

Do I need a physical address for a Google Business Profile?

Not necessarily. If you serve customers at their location rather than yours - a tradesperson, a mobile service, or a consultant - you can set up a service-area business and hide your address while still specifying the towns and regions you cover. This matters for a lot of South Wales businesses that work across Cardiff, the Valleys and beyond without a shopfront.

How does a Google Business Profile fit with the rest of your local SEO?

A Business Profile works best when the rest of your local signals agree with it - consistent details across your site and directories, and on-page content that names the areas you serve. On its own it's powerful; joined up with a properly optimised website, it's how local businesses climb.

I'm James Huntington, an SEO consultant based in Cardiff, and a missing or half-finished Google Business Profile is the most common thing I find in a local audit - it was the very first fix on a Wrexham dental lab that went from effectively invisible to ranking locally in six weeks. If you're not sure whether yours is helping or holding you back, a Local SEO Audit checks it first - Cardiff-based, working across South Wales.
