5 On-Page SEO Fixes Every Small Business Website Needs

You don't need an agency retainer or a developer to make real SEO progress. Some of the highest-impact changes are on-page basics that most small business sites get wrong - and that you can fix yourself in an afternoon. Here are some tips for on-page SEO for small business and the five I check first.

  1. Give every page a proper title tag

Your title tag is the clickable headline in Google's results and the single most important on-page SEO element. Yet most small sites leave pages titled "Home" or just the business name. Each page should have a unique title that says what the page is about and, for a local business, where you are - for example, "Logo Designer in Cardiff | Signature", not "Home". Keep it under about 60 characters so it doesn't get cut off.

  1. Use one clear H1, then H2s and H3s in order

Search engines and AI systems use your headings to understand a page's structure. Each page should have exactly one H1 - the main heading - followed by H2s for sections and H3s for sub-points, in a logical order. The common mistake is using big text that only looks like a heading without the actual heading tag, which tells Google nothing. If your page builder lets you set the tag, set it deliberately.

  1. Write a real meta description

The meta description is the grey summary text under your result. Google doesn't use it as a direct ranking factor, but it heavily influences whether someone clicks. A blank or auto-generated one wastes the space. Write a clear, benefit-led sentence or two - around 150 characters - that tells the searcher exactly what they'll get and gives them a reason to choose you.

  1. Add internal links between your pages

Internal links - links from one page of your site to another - help Google discover your pages and understand how they relate. They also guide visitors toward the pages that matter, like your contact or services page. The fix is simple: wherever you mention a service or topic that has its own page, link to it, using descriptive link text like "our local SEO audit" rather than "click here".

  1. Sort out your images

Images are the most overlooked on-page fix. Three things to check on every image: it's compressed so it doesn't slow the page down (speed is a ranking factor), it has a descriptive file name (cardiff-logo-design.jpg, not IMG_4821.jpg), and it has alt text describing what it shows. Alt text helps both accessibility and Google's understanding of the image - a genuine two-for-one.

Where to start

If you do nothing else, start with the title tags and the Google Business Profile if you're a local business - those two move the needle fastest, and the rest compound over time. The reason these get missed isn't difficulty; it's that nothing flags them from the inside - your site looks fine to you, so the gaps stay invisible. That's what an audit is for. If you'd rather have it done for you, a Local SEO Audit covers all five of these and more. Cardiff-based, working across South Wales.
